FOSS4G Central and Eastern Europe 2013

16th - 20th June, National Library of Romania, Bucharest, Romania

Open Media Mapping Hackathon

Open Media Mapping Hackathon is a Knight-Mozilla Open News funded event, initiated by the Sponge Media Innovation Lab for Eastern Europe, that will put in practice the techniques learned by journalists in the "FOSS4G Tools for (Geo)Data Driven Journalism", workshop held at FOSS4G-CEE 2013 conference. Using the experience gained during the Open Media Challenge, the activity will bring together professionals from three different fields of activity: experts in geoinformatics, coders and journalists, to develop new methods to process and interactively visualise (geo)data for the Black Sea Basin.

Current ideas:

  • Develop an interactive mapping component for the Black Sea Media Project.
  • Create an interactive mapping application to be used by investigative journalists for genetically modified organism (GMO) related investigations in the Black Sea Basin.

You are not limited to ideas from the list above. If you have your own idea for a project, include it in the wiki page and describe it thoroughly.

We are offering:

  • A lovely terrace surrounded with red roses in the center of Bucharest;
  • Wireless Internet;
  • Pizza and beverages.

The Sponge is a media innovation lab, a first in Eastern Europe, a region full of creativity and young educated talents. The way it is implemented: non-linear, bottom – up, first the content then the form. The Sponge develops evolutionary solutions and technologies, to harvest data, and make it easy accessible, transparent and relevant. For more details go here.
